Alberta government delays new school flag restrictions and mandatory weekly anthem playing to allow educational boards additional preparation time.
EDMONTON, Alta. — The Alberta government announced an adjustment to the implementation timeline for proposed provincial school flag guidelines and mandatory anthem policies, delaying their enforcement past the upcoming September school term to allow for thorough consultation with school trustees.
Under the adjusted schedule, provincial regulations governing which flags may be flown outside public schools and the weekly playing of the national anthem are postponed, while core updates to the student code of conduct and neutral classroom subject presentation will proceed as scheduled.
"We are committed to a thoughtful and measured rollout that gives school divisions the clarity and support they need," Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides stated.
The Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) welcomed the postponement, noting that local school authorities require sufficient operational guidance to update administrative procedures across 61 school divisions.
Provincial education officials will convene working sessions with superintendents and trustees throughout the fall term prior to issuing final regulatory guidelines.
